The single most annoying thing about iPhone for me is that I can not connect my iPhone with a Wi-Fi connection. But, Devicescape has resolved my problem, as now I can easily connect my iPhone at Wi-Fi hotspots.

Devicescape has introduced an application for the iPhone, called AppTapp which allows you to connect your iPhone with Wi-Fi hot-spots without any interruption in username and password. The Devicescape Connect requires the Nullriver AppTapp application installer, so that you can simply connect to any network for which you have entered the credentials at their account management site.

All you need to do is just set up an account at MyDevicescape and enter at any Wi-Fi hotspot and information, which you want to give. Then Devicescape automatically logs in the process for dozens of Wi-Fi hotspot networks and service providers of hot-spots, including T-Mobile HotSpot, AT&T WiFi, Fon, Boingo and iPass. The Devicescape also offer you dozens fee-free networks, which only requires some confirmation step or login account to use the hot-spot.

With the use of Devicescape Connect, you can simply use the Connect application and click login to enter into the hot-spot. Devicescape uses only three steps to enter you any WI-Fi hot-spot:

1) In first step, it logins your request through the hot-spot’s DNS service
2) While in second, it receives an encrypted set of login details
3) At last, it passes those credentials to the hot-spots

Devicescape is planning to offer some sort of purchase service from some networks to generate the revenue. Devicescape’s Connect software allows you to be online at anywhere and anytime.

The Seabird Island is the first nation in British Columbia is going to set up a good example for the first nation communities across Canada with its innovative use of technology from Siemens. Seabird is the first community in Canada to launch a high performance wireless mesh network solutions from Siemens, which provides the high-speed broadband wireless access to support residential, educational and business communication.

Siemens and BelAir Networks have partnered with Chief Clem Seymour and local residents of the community to deploy 49 BelAir Networks wireless access nodes across the community. These nodes can easily be mounted on light poles to provide a wireless carrier backbone to support various services including Point of Sale (POS) terminals at the local gas bar and events.

Siemen’s new network will help the community to reduce the monitoring cost of flood meter by replacing wired lines with a wireless connection. Even the community may also use the network to extend its Closed Circuit TV (CCTV) network and also provide the cost-effective residential telephone service on Seabird Island. Both companies have also developed a training program to train Seabird Island Band personal to pre-stage, program, install, and administrator and repair the wireless network. This training program will help community to manage and maintain the network independently. Even communities can create jobs and ensure self sufficiency.

Chief Clem Seymour, said,

Our new wireless network offers a broad range of communications and revenue opportunities for us. We will be able to create new services for the community and offer our local schools increased educational opportunities through new high speed connectivity.

Chip designer, Alereon Inc has unveiled its first chip named AL5100 which uses frequency band that is legal all over the world for wireless Universal Serial Bus (USB), a technology with the potential that cuts the tangle of cables surrounding computers.

USB cables connect computers with mice, keyboards, printers, cameras and external hard-drives. The new chip, AL5100 will connect to computers with optional wireless add-in cards, or dongles that go onto USB port.

The underlying radio technology is called Ultra-Wideband (UWB), and uses frequencies, which is usually employed for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mobile phones and other wireless technologies. It is relatively virgin territory in the airwaves, and exploits high data transfer rates with low power consumption at the price of range, the signal hardly goes further than 10m.

Alereon spokesman Mike Krell said,

The Austin, Texas-based company’s first UWB chipset, the AL4000, to reach the consumer market in a month or two in wireless USB hubs, to which peripherals can be connected with standard USB cables. The hub itself communicates wirelessly to a dongle on the computer.

McDonald restaurants in the US have been WiFied some years back, now even the restaurants in UK will offer free WiFi to their British customers.

By the end of this year most of the 1,200 McDonald restaurants in the UK will have this free high speed internet available for its customers. Cool, so now you can munch on your favorite burger and fries and go online for free via your laptops, compatible mobile phones and games consoles for hours on end!

According to McDonalds, a user who pays to log on for just an hour a week in a coffee shop can save an amazing £260 a year on premium WiFi charges by simply using McDonald’s free service!

But, aren’t there chances of this free service being misused? After all, someone can just buy a cup of coffee and sit and access the free service for hours on end! According to a company spokesman,

we would be comfortable with that. There will be no restrictions.

Smart move! After all, the longer a person spends in a restaurant the more the chances are that the consumer will end up spending more! I would say, an absolute win-win situation, both for McDonalds and for the customers.

Now, digital camera owners can send pictures to their home PCs or upload them to photo sharing websites through Wi-Fi. US based company, Eye-Fi is planning to launch Secure Digital memory cards with integrated Wi-Fi chips, which will allow digital camera owners to send pictures remotely through Wi-Fi to a home home PCs or to upload them to photo sharing websites.

The standard SD card size and onboard wireless functionality should allow the wireless connectivity to work with a camera and not interfere with its normal function. Users can set the photos to go directly to a PC or other location immediately, or after a photo session is complete. The card comes with 2GB storage capacity.

Eye-Fi founder and CEO Yuval Koren, said,

The focus will initially be on the home network. At $100 the price point may be a bit much, especially for the ‘home network’ market. You can get a 2GB or more actually memory card for much cheaper than $100.

The card is set to cost about $100 and its is expected to go on sale later this year. Currently, the company is negotiating with websites to allow direct uploads from cameras containing the cards.

Soon, citizens of Riverside will access free wireless Internet service across the city. Riverside has launched a free wireless Internet network to help residents of the city to become more Internet savvy. The city government has launched the free wireless Internet service in collaboration with AT&T and municipal Internet network builder MetroFi. Now, the city has joined 300 cities across the nation, which are already providing citywide wireless network for residents and businesses.

Initially the network will cover a 3-square-mile area, encompassing downtown Riverside, Hunter Technology Park and the Adams Auto Centre. In the next phase of the development, the network will cover the entire city, except for a few outlaying areas. The network uses two spectrum’s, which are given below:

1) 2.4 Gigahertz frequency for the general public
2) 4.9 Gigahertz frequency for police and fire

The network will allow city workers to use their network for the remote operation of ball field lights as well as water pumps and valves, so that they can save staff time as well as electricity. The public safety spectrum would not be fully operational until the network is active throughout the city. As it goes live, police officers would be able to transmit real-time video feeds from their dashboard cameras to police headquarters, while dispatchers would be able to send video to patrol units.

There are other municipal applications, including streaming video from street cameras for traffic management, broadcasting radio signals to control baseball field lighting systems and monitoring surveillance cameras set up in locations where graffiti vandalism and illegal dumping are a problem.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has turned down a free WiFi plan put forward by M2Z Networks saying that the regulatory authority can not permit a single company to control a large segment of spectrum without overlooking the public interest.

M2Z Networks has applied for a license petition to use the unused spectrum, 2155MHz-to-2175MHz band to provide WiFi services to customers including free 384Kbps broadband with the option of paying for higher speeds. The company has also agreed to pay the US Treasury 5 percent of its gross revenues annually for using the spectrum band. Much earlier, NetFreeUS has made a similar bid, but FCC rejected that.

FCC has also cited that the 384Kbps downstream speed is very low. Thus it can not be taken as broadband if a fresh regulation that proposes to increase the current benchmark from 200kbps to 2Mbps is approved.

The FCC decision has made the two leading mobile operators, AT&T and Verizon Wireless happy as they have always demanded regular auction process for the airwaves.

Sprint has been working on deploying a WiMAX network across the nation. Sprint Nextel has partnered with the Clearwire to develop the single largest WiMAX network in the US. The high-speed WimAX service will allow customers to move between their networks and reduce the costs of wireless service.

The WiMAX is designed to deliver mobile broadband services in urban and rural markets. It is expected that the wireless service will enable each company to increase its capital efficiency and reduce overall network development and operating costs. Sprint will primarily focus on geographic areas under its network plan, which covers approximately 185 million people, including 75 percent of the people who are located in the 50 largest markets. While Clearwire will cover approximately 115 million people.

Sprint Nextel and Clearwire are planning to provide open access of Internet over a robust wireless broadband network, which is designed to deliver comparable speeds than the existing wireline broadband services. The service will also facilitate the Federal Government and public safety agencies, who are heavily rely on wireless networks during times of crisis.

According to Stanford Group analyst, Michael Nelson, WiMAX is an emerging wireless technology, in which Sprint and Clearwire have endorsed. They are planning to use WiMax to compete with rival wireless and wired broadband networks.

Sprint Nextel and Clearwire will market mobile WiMAX services under their common service brand name. While Clearwire will provide mobile WiMAX services through Sprint Nextel’s retail stores and through its own distribution channels.
