According to one prediction, the open-source community is coming up to convert VxWorks-based Linksys wireless WRT54G routers to Linux. The process does not require hardware hacking and installs a recent version of ‘DD-WRT micro’.
This Linux version supports the VxWorks-based ’series 5′ WRT54G would be available in market, when the DD-WRT creates its project in ‘micro‘ edition with a 1.7MB footprint.
Jeremy Collake aka db90h is creating a VxWorks Killer flash image which will overwrite the VxWorks bootloader on series 5 WRT54G routers with normal Broadcom CFE firmware.
Presently the process is not reversible on WRT54G devices, so it is not modified to add a JTAG interface. The power failure during the two second installment process may cause a permanently incapacitate or “brick” the device.
As compare to full DD-WRT distribution, the ‘micro version’ leaves the packages, which include:
1. Chillispot
2. Nocat
3. rflow
4. Kaid
5. Samba client
6. SNMP
7. IPv6
8. MMC/SD Card Support
9. SSH, PPTP/PPTP Client
10. UPnP
It supports the PPPoE.
