There are great strides being made of
Someone talks of wiring all the homes in the locality, wiring the fields and now there is talk of wiring the whole city with WiFi.
Yes it happens to be true.
It is being said that the San Francisco’s mayor Gavin Newsom’s has a proposal to WiFi the entire city of San Francisco.
It is being said that Newsom has WiFi a major part on his mayoral agenda. As per the promise given by him, it is said to move in the last year.
Infact he had sought public comments and proposals in 45 days. Till date two dozen technology firms that includes Google and Earthlink that have responded with viable plans involving public-private partnership.
Google is said to have handed over a 100-page business plan that includes free basic service coupled with a fee-based premium plan. But only a few pages of that proposal are available for public review.
Given the past record of San Francisco with public-private partnerships which happens to be poor, it will be difficult to predict the feasibility.
In simple terms, city’s plan is to create WiFi, a municipal utility and run the entire system itself. In times to come it can operate cable TV, phones, and broadband and create a national model for public control.
If this proposal is worked out. The citywide broadband system will go a long way in bridging the digital divide. This may turn out to be a boon to the local economy and local small businesses which can put the San Francisco on the top.
Well it remains to see how the things will shape up.
