The network that is encouraged by projects in San Francisco and Amsterdam has been planned to cover 90% of Greater Manchester and it would benefit up to 2.2 million people. If everything happened as per plans visualized by city council, Manchester will become the biggest free wireless internet hotspot in Europe. An open debate with respect to the plan is scheduled for December 15 in which interested parties or individuals can take part.
The initiative taken by the council’s Digital Development Agency (DDA) will cover 100 square miles in the beginning and then rise to 400 square miles in the near future. Dave Carter, head of the DDA, said:
The government competition has spurred us into action on this and really made us think what an incredible effect on both the business and domestic lives of Mancunians such a network would have.
