Fon is a Spanish start up and not an ordinary one. It’s attracting $21.5 million investment from Skype and Google. Fon wants to build a global WiFi community. Here consumers will share their broadband internet access with their friends and peers and also by synchronizing the home WiFi hotspots will enjoy instant access to all the other hotspots on the network.

The Madrid based start up was created only three month ago by Martin Varvarsy. The service officially launched on Feb 6 and was on test for last couple of months. It has currently 3000 customers on board.

FON offers people free software to download to their computers, which will then open up their WiFi routers, allowing password-protected access for others. At first, the service will only be compatible with Linksys routers, but FON plans to offer a download compatible with other routers, Varsavsky said.
