FON, Google and Sequoia Capital-backed community WiFi provider has signed an deal with UK broadband provider British Telecom to create the world’s largest community.
Under this agreement, BT’s 3 million broadband customers can access around 190,000 FON Wi-Fi access points with any additional charges.
In return, BT subscribers who will sign up for the scheme will share a small portion of their connection by opening a separate secure channel on their wireless router for other FON members to use. Other non-members can also access FON Wi-Fi network by paying some extra charges.
Other investors in FON include Google, Skype, Index Ventures and Sequoia Capital. This movement will allow BT to give Wi-Fi coverage to its customers at a minimal cost, while FON gets the exposure and credibility it needs to encourage more people to join.
After all FON does not provide the Internet access itself but it only serves as a middleman and provides the software to make Wi-Fi points throughout the world as easy and as safe to connect to as possible. FON is expanding its network in rural parts of Asia, Africa, South America and Australia and making it the largest Wi-Fi community in the world.
