Worldwide interoperability for microwave access or Wimax as it is better known is expected to become the better choice over 3G or Wi-Fi for many operators worldwide in an effort to boost broadband services. Alcatel Philippines President Herve Pourcines in an interview have prophesied this.
He said that Wimax is a more reliable broadband infrastructure that could offer significant economic benefits to the Philippines. Explaining, he said that while Wimax is broadband communications becoming wireless, 3G is wireless trying to go broadband. Nonetheless, 3G can run short of expectations for more advanced services due in part to a much lower throughput capacity.
Pourcines said;
Wimax offers typically a throughput of 22megabits per second (Mbps) per cell, which is around 2 to 4 times more powerful than 3G with HSDPA (high speed downlink packet access) for the same spectrum width and provides a much better bandwidth at the edge of the cell. Typical sellable end-user peak rates are 128 kbps for GSM/EDGE and 512-1Mbps for HSDPA but those peak rates are several Mbps for Wimax. One of WiMAX’s main advantages is that it is today the only fully IP native wireless access technology and that it could re-use existing 2G/3G sites in urban areas. Its potential coverage is about 1 to 2km in dense urban areas and 15 to 30km in rural areas.
Anyway, Pourcines however said that Wimax is a ‘complementary’ technology to 3G as it remains attractive for voice services while Wimax would focus on broadband wireless Internet access.
So let’s see if his prophecy really comes true. As it seems now, Wimax has a great potential and thus a very good future in terms of popularity is assured.
